Dr. Emily Callan
C.Psychol, CSci, AFBPsS
Dr Callan is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Scientist with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and a Registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (HCPC). She has extensive experience in the NHS, private and charitable organisations, working with families, adults, staff teams and students. She has worked in a range of therapeutic areas including neuropsychological assessment & rehabilitation, adult mental health and physical health services. She has also completed accredited training in Expert Witness work with the BPS and is a trained supervisor for clinical psychology trainees, speciality doctors (psychiatry), counsellors, assistant psychologists and undergraduate psychology students.
Dr Callan is currently employed as a Senior Specialist Clinical Psychologist within the NHS and works within a Brain Injury Rehabilitation Team supporting adults effected by acquired brain injury and neurological illness. Dr Callan specialises in supporting adults effected by neurological illness/ injury, anxiety, bereavement, functional (medically unexplained) symptoms and the psychological impact of physical illness and injury. Dr Callan is skilled in providing structured cognitive and neuropsychological assessment for adults and young people aged 16 and over.
Dr Callan is currently employed as a clinical neuropsychologist within the NHS supporting adults diagnosed with long term and degenerative neurological conditions, acquired brain injury and stroke. She also works alongside charitable organisations providing psychological support to those with long-term physical health conditions and end of life care. Dr Callan specialises in the assessment and rehabilitation of adults effected by neurological illness/ injury, anxiety, trauma & PTSD, bereavement, functional (medically unexplained) symptoms and the psychological impact of physical illness and injury. Dr Callan also offers carer and family support to those bereaved/ effected by suicide. Dr Callan provides structured cognitive and neuropsychological assessment for adults and young people aged 18 and over.
Dr Callan is experienced in the integration of a number of therapeutic approaches and uses a person-centred approach, drawing on a number of psychological models appropriate to individual client needs. She draws on a theoretical background of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion focussed (CFT) and acceptance and commitment approaches (ACT). She is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Skills.
Dr Callan has delivered input to undergraduate and postgraduate psychology courses as an Associate Lecturer providing teaching on clinical applications of therapy models. She is also a Consultant Practitioner, providing training, reflective practice, supervision and support for staff teams on a range of psychosocial needs.
