Hello, I’m Janice.
I am a Relational Integrative Psychotherapist and a member of the UKCP, working towards accreditation. I offer therapy to individuals aged 18+ and have run my independent practice in Dunstable for the past couple of years, more recently expanding to Milton Keynes. I see clients in person at both locations. I also volunteer for Frontline19, offering support to NHS workers who are often under immense pressure, even post-Covid-19. I am excited to join Serendipity Psychology as an Associate Therapist.
I have experience working with clients on a range of emotional difficulties, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, grief, loss, and cultural and identity issues. Often, when clients first come to therapy, they may not even be sure what the underlying problem is. For some, a short course of sessions may be all they need to gain clarity and develop coping skills. Others may wish to delve deeper to heal relational difficulties, both past and present, which may require longer-term therapy. However long it takes, I am here to journey with them. I believe that building trust between client and therapist helps clients feel safe, allowing us to explore—at their pace—what is causing them to keep reacting the way they do.
Drawing on various therapeutic models to tailor my approach to each client, I work relationally, meaning we examine experiences as they arise in our interactions. Clients may gain new insights into themselves and their environment, often opening up a way to move forward.
People tell me that I have a calm way of working and that I am easy to talk to. I have a diverse background, ranging from medical sciences and office work to children’s and pastoral care, counselling, and experience in spirituality, cross-cultural issues, bereavement, and working with terminal and chronic illness.
I grew up in Hong Kong when it was under British rule but settled in the UK decades ago. I can still speak passable Cantonese, though regrettably, I have not passed it on to my two biracial adult children. Navigating cultural differences in family life while integrating into rural communities has been challenging at times, so I can relate to some of the struggles ethnic minorities face, as well as the richness these experiences can bring.
I have a special interest in working with Asian and South Asian clients, whether first-generation immigrants or British-born, who seek me out because they often feel I have a certain understanding or shared cultural experience.
