What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a well evidence-based therapy initially established for the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD), also known as an emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD). Since its initial development in the 1980s, it has been more widely used and is now used to help those with a range of other complex mental health needs, for example, eating disorders, substance misuse disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), and autistic spectrum disorders (ASD).

The therapy targets four specific problem areas that people struggling with mental health and personality-related challenged commonly experience difficulty with:

  • Regulation of emotions (Emotion Regulation)
  • Tolerating distress and managing crises (Distress Tolerance)
  • Coping in relationships with others (Interpersonal Effectiveness)
  • Living in the present moment rather than the past or the future (Mindfulness)

By teaching core skills relating to these areas, DBT helps people learn effective ways of coping with their intense emotions as an alternative to less effective forms of coping such as self-harm, alcohol use or arguing with others.
