Delve into the distinctions between these two therapeutic approaches, explore the reasons to seek therapy, and learn about our accessible online, phone, and face-to-face sessions.
Here at Serendipity Psychology, we understand that before booking your session, you may want to learn more about our counsellors and psychotherapists, which is why each associate working with us has a detailed profile on the website, which can be found linked below:
Generally speaking, these are two different talking therapy professions that offer different things. However, the terms can be confusing because they overlap and can be used interchangeably. It is also possible for a therapist to be both a counsellor and a psychotherapist depending upon their training.
In essence, the main theoretical distinction is that counsellors work in a more immediate way and may focus on a current issue that is affecting the client. Psychotherapists think and work at a deeper level, considering how the client’s personality may be affecting their experience of relationships and relating to their world. While both can be long-term if the client requires and chooses this, counselling is likely to be a briefer intervention to psychotherapy.
Some of our therapists are specialists in offering specific types of psychotherapy and choose to work only in one or two of these specialist modalities such as: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
More information about the distinction between these different talking therapy professions can be found in our FAQs section.
There are a vast number of reasons why people seek counselling or psychotherapy, including: a feeling of loss of connection to others or themselves; feeling out of control; money or employment worries; relationship concerns; loss and grief and; a variety of mental health difficulties. Counselling and psychotherapy can help you manage these major life events while providing that nurturing space for you to explore and understand the impact it has had on you more deeply. For some people, it can even be a lifestyle choice that they choose to engage in to enable them to have a reflective space to maintain their emotional health and well-being.
It is particularly important in these uncertain times to check in with our mental health. It could be that the pandemic has caused you to feel worried and anxious, or that you feel despondent, depressed and unmotivated, or maybe you were already struggling before the pandemic and now feel even more lost and unable to reach out for help. Perhaps your normal support network is no longer available, appointments with healthcare providers have been reduced or cancelled, and you are feeling even more isolated and alone. Counselling and psychotherapy can provide that support in a time when support is limited.
At Serendipity Psychology, we have tried to make counselling and psychotherapy as accessible as possible, and so we offer online sessions as well as phone and face-to-face consultations.
We are able to offer sessions for a number of different issues, including anxiety, depression, loss, trauma and more complex mental health difficulties.
Whatever it is that has encouraged you to visit this site or to look more into counselling and psychotherapy sessions for yourself. We are here to support you and help you to overcome your current struggles.
In addition to our usual services, we also offer a low-fee therapy service for those who are unable to afford to pay the full rate for therapeutic services. This service starts from £45 depending on individual circumstances and who it is allocated to.
Most of our low-fee services are offered by experienced trainee therapists and assistant psychologists who are supervised by our senior team of psychologists. All our trainees and assistants are rigorously interviewed and vetted before they are invited to join our team. They are also required to be members of professional governing bodies such as the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the British Psychological Society (BPS) or The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

We only take on counsellors and psychotherapists as associates if they are trained, or training to level 5 or above and are members of a well-established professional body such as the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). This is so that you can be assured that you are working with a trained and regulated professional. Many of our counsellors and psychotherapists are also supervised and supported by psychologists as well as counselling or psychotherapy supervisors, which means they are able to safely offer some of the tools and techniques their training might not otherwise give them. It also means that all our therapists are informed by principles from the different talking professions, which we gain from consultation with each other.
